International Society for Krishna Consciousness, popularly known as the Hare Krishna Movement, is a spiritual society founded by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada in July 1966 in New York. ISKCON belongs to the Gaudiya-Vaishnava sampradaya, a monotheistic tradition within ancient Vedic culture and spiritual heritage.
Today ISKCON comprises more than 400 temples, 40 rural communities and over 100 vegetarian restaurants worldwide. It also conducts special projects throughout the world, such as "Food for Life", the only free vegetarian relief program in the world, serving millions with compassion and spiritual nourishment for body and soul.
The aim of ISKCON is to acquaint all people of the world with universal principles of self-realization and God consciousness so that they may derive the highest benefit of spiritual understanding, unity and peace. We teach the eternal science of bhakti-yoga through practical application in daily life.
The Vedic literature recommends that in the present age of Kali-yuga the most effective means of achieving self-realization is chanting the Holy Names: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. This sublime chanting connects directly with Supreme Lord.
Over five hundred years ago, Lord Sri Krishna appeared as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Navadvipa, West Bengal. The purpose of His appearance was to inaugurate the Sankirtana Movement, the Yuga Dharma for this age of Kali. He predicted that His holy names would spread to every town and village worldwide.
Srila Prabhupada appeared to fulfill this prophecy, born on September 01, 1896, the day after Janmashtami in Tollygunge suburb of Calcutta. His father Gour Mohan De and mother Rajani named him Abhay Charan, meaning "one who is fearless, having taken shelter at Krishna's lotus feet of divine protection."
Agra city has deep spiritual significance beyond the Taj Mahal. His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada had a strong connection with this city, visiting several times and staying for weeks at devotee Mr. Mathura Prasad Agarwal's residence on Motilal Nehru Road, where he received divine inspiration.
Mr. Mathura Prasad Agarwal encouraged Srila Prabhupada to preach in America. With the help of Mr. Gopal Prasad Agarwal's son in Butler, Pennsylvania, Srila Prabhupada went to America in 1965. There he chanted God's names and performed Harinama Sankirtana, leading to rapid growth of followers worldwide.
This deep connection of Srila Prabhupada with Agra city represents utmost mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. To treasure this sacred connection, ISKCON AGRA has existed for the last 12 years, engaging people in loving service of Sri Sri Jagannath, Baldev, Subhadra Mai with devotion and spiritual transformation.
